After considering the facts, it will be agreed that from the point of view of our health, care of the teeth is more important than any beauty or body care. Of course, when I was a little boy I am afraid I heartily disagreed with the idea of cleaning my teeth every day. It seemed enough of a restriction to my freedom to have to wash daily and keep blowing my nose. Why should I be bothered with even more work? Couldn’t my teeth keep themselves clean? I wondered. Indeed, I thought they could, because I had heard of primitive tribes who live a natural life, close to nature, and they had beautiful teeth without ever having to brush them or give them special care. But eventually I learned that on account of our modern diet and way of living, we have lost many of the advantages that those primitive peoples still enjoyed. My parents told me that bacteria settle between the teeth, attack and destroy them. They get into every crack, multiply and eventually cause tooth decay. The questions remained, ‘How do primitive people cope with bacteria? Why do their teeth remain healthy and beautiful? Are the bacteria unable to invade, multiply and cause decay, just as they do in civilised people?’
