In cases of high blood pressure, doctors frequently prescribe diuretics to decrease water retention and increase the release of urine. In 1984 doctors issued over 5 million prescriptions for thiazide and over 4 million for furosemide. Discuss your prescription with your doctor, as a furosemide-type diuretic increases calcium excretion in the urine while thiazides reduce calcium loss and would be preferable in many cases.
If your water retention is a monthly occurrence as a premenstrual condition, it can frequently be controlled by a saltless or sodium-free diet in the week immediately before your menstrual period, and by eating naturally-diuretic foods such as bananas, oranges, apples, cucumbers, strawberries, grapes and pineapple.
