Research on cantharides, or Spanish fly, on the other hand, has completely stopped—with good reason. Wildly touted over centuries as both an erection intensifier and a love potion, this powder is made by crushing the dried meloid beetle, an insect readily found in parts of the Mediterranean. While the powder may produce a warm, sometimes burning sensation in the penis after ingestion, it is, in fact, totally useless in inducing an erection. Too much of the substance can actually damage the urinary and digestive tracts—and a mere one thousandth of an ounce is enough to destroy the kidneys. Given its extreme toxicity, true Spanish fly is now listed as a Class 1 poison and is unavailable in the United States.
An herb obtained from the inner bark of the yohimbe, an evergreen tree that grows in Cameroon, Congo, and Gabon, has also been used by Africans to boost sexual prowess. Yohimbine, the active ingredient of yohimbe bark, is a natural ingredient that causes an increase in small blood vessel dilation. The enlargement of vessels increases blood flow to the penis, leading to an erection. Men given yohimbine intravenously have been known to have almost instant erections. Interestingly, however, when yohimbine is injected directly into the penis there is no resulting erection. This finding has led some researchers to speculate that yohimbine is actually affecting the pleasure centers in the brain—and a specific neurotransmitter, dopamine, in particular. The herb may also be influencing the blood levels of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter or brain chemical that stimulates the sex center located in the hypothalamus.
Yohimbine is still used by many urologists to treat ED. While it can take up to three weeks before results are noticeable, the herb is particularly effective for men without any sexual difficulties, but who seek enhanced pleasure. Not only does it have the ability to augment libido, it can stimulate erections and trigger more powerful orgasms.
