THE VIRILITY-ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM: THE GINSENG EFFECT

Today, many doctors are recommending the use of saw palmetto extract instead of prescription drugs to treat BPH. If you are one of the 50 percent of men over the age of fifty who have developed troublesome symptoms of BPH, talk to your physician about trying saw palmetto. A recent small study of fifty men, conducted at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, found that half taking the extract experienced a 50 percent improvement in urinary symptom problems. While it is not yet known just how saw palmetto works, it does seem to make the urine stream freer-flowing as well as relieve other typical BPH symptoms. And, perhaps most significantly of all, it accomplishes this without any ED-inducing side effects.

If BPH is a concern, consult with your doctor. After ruling out the possibility of prostate cancer with a simple office examination and a blood test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), I often recommend that saw palmetto be tried. The typical dose is 160 milligrams taken twice daily, a regimen that is continued for up to eight weeks. If a definite benefit is experienced, then the regimen is continued. If, however, there is no change in urinary condition, then I will try a prescription drug approach to the problem. Typically, I prescribe an alpha-adrenergic blocker such as terazosin (Hytrin) or the newer tamsulosis (Flomax). If the drugs don’t work, surgery may be recommended.

If you have a family history of BPH or prostate cancer but have

Supplementation is an important part of maintaining and enhancing virility. But, it can’t—and shouldn’t—be considered a substitute for the right diet that will contribute to your overall health. Even if you adhere to a beneficial diet, you should also be aware of specific foods that will make you feel, look, and perform better.

We all know that a fat-heavy diet is not beneficial. As a general rule, a balanced, low-fat diet with at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily will do you a world of good. Focusing more meals around carbohydrates (pasta, rice, and beans), with meat as a side dish, is a sound way to eat.

But there is more to consider. You may not be aware of the way

not yet experienced any symptoms, saw palmetto can be a great health aid. Once you reach your forties, consider taking 80 mg of the extract daily. It can enhance the health of your prostate, considerably reducing or even eliminating the chance of developing BPH.

Finally, there is another prescription for BPH, one that does not require medication of any kind. For mild BPH cases, sex at least once a week seems to significantly reduce prostate swelling and eliminate some of the troubling symptoms in the process. Many men find that meeting this minimum, or increasing the frequency of sex to three or more times a week, goes a long way toward reducing symptoms—with no adverse side effects.

And even for men with no BPH problems, frequent sex is a practice that should be seriously considered. Basically, the old clich? about “use it or lose it” is true, at least in this case. A regularly occurring erection supplies oxygen to the blood vessels and tissues of the penis. Maintaining this vital oxygenation reduces the chances of developing erection problems in the future.
