THE POTENCY PROBLEMS: COMPARING THE IMPLANTS

Standard Inflatable Implants

Benefits

• The size of the prosthesis changes as it is pumped up, so a man can control the amount of erection he wants.

• The erection is closer in appearance to a natural erection.

• The implant has less chance of popping out of the corpora cavernosa and traveling” within the penis.

• For men with recurring bladder tumors that may require repeated surgery, inflatable implants are easier for the surgeon to operate around.

Drawbacks

• There is a higher failure rate because of the moving parts. However, the mechanical failure rate should continue to drop as implant design improves.

• The implant is more expensive. The device itself costs more, the hospital stay is usually longer and therefore more expensive, the surgeon’s fee may be more and the operating time is longer and more costly.

• The man needs manual dexterity to operate the implant. Someone with a problem like severe arthritis or Parkinson’s disease might find it unworkable. Of course, the partner can help.

The OmniPhase Implant

The OmniPhase is a new type of implant which is a cross between the inflatable and the semirigid implants, but with a new twist. Like the inflatable type, it is rigid only when the man wants it to be. He must activate a cable within the implantto make it rigid. Like the semirigid type, it is wholly contained within the penis and does not have a reservoir. Best of all, the OmniPhase can be inserted using a local anesthetic. While it hasn’t been around long enough for anyone to know how reliable it will be over time, the OmniPhase is worth talking about with your doctor.
