NORMAL CHANGES IN SEXUAL POTENCY

Now that we’ve punched holes in some common myths, let’s look at the changes a man should expect, and how he can turn them to his and his partner’s advantage.

As you age, you undergo changes—normal changes. The differences will not be apparent overnight. You won’t notice a sudden change in performance when you turn 40, or 50 or 60—unless, perhaps, you persuade yourself that such will be the case. The changes occur gradually, and each individual has his own particular pattern, with some men noticing changes earlier than others. But some changes are almost universally associated with aging:

• A longer period of time is needed to reach an erection. (Some interesting work has been done to actually measure this change. Two researchers at the University of Southern California showed the same erotic movie to two groups of men and measured their responses. The men who were between 19 and 30 years of age developed erections almost six times faster than the men between 48 and 65 years old.)

• The erection may be slightly less firm than when a man was younger.

• If s easier to delay orgasm and ejaculation.

• Ejaculation is less forceful. (For some men, the ejaculation is also slightly less pleasurable.)

• Less fluid is ejaculated.

• After orgasm, erection is lost more quickly.

• And, perhaps the most noticed change: There’s a longer period of “down time” between erections.

A man will usually experience these changes over a period of many years, generally beginning in his 30′s. Typically, they come on gradually, and sometimes are so subtle they won’t be noticed for a longtime. Many of these changes will be insignificant; some will be welcome; some will require some adjustment. If you and your partner know what’s normal for your particular age group, you’ll know when something’s amiss. And if you do develop an erection problem that persists, you’ll know when to get help.
